BIG BAND LAB

Big Band Lab: Matúš Jakabčic CZ-SK Big Band Joins Forces with Students to Bring Big Orchestra Practice

Playing in a large jazz orchestra ranks among the most demanding yet rewarding musical experiences. However, due to absent or insufficient jazz education and a lack of students in individual instrument sections, most music schools in Slovakia are unable to assemble a fully-fledged big band. The educational project Big Band Lab actively helps address this exact lack of practical experience.

Why Was Big Band Lab Created and Who Is It For?

The main objective of the Big Band Lab project is to give young musicians and students of all levels—ranging from basic art schools (ZUŠ) to conservatories and higher education institutions—the opportunity to familiarize themselves with the specifics of big band interpretation. In addition to the students themselves, a key target audience includes their teachers, who can draw inspiration for working with young talents.

ow Does the Preparation Work Under Professional Guidance?

The educational process within the Big Band Lab project follows a clear structure that gradually prepares participants for the final performance:

  • Individual Practice: Students first study their parts independently under the guidance of experienced instructors.
  • Section Rehearsals: Detailed work follows within individual instrument groups (woodwinds, trumpets, trombones, rhythm section).
  • Full Orchestra Rehearsals: The entire orchestra comes together under the guidance of experienced educators and artists to rehearse pieces from the global jazz repertoire.
