The Creative World of Children and Textiles
23.5. 2025 – textile workshop at the Umelka Gallery, offering young artists the opportunity to explore the fascinating combination of painting and textile techniques. Led by artist Karina Kolčáková, the workshop’s objective was to introduce children to a creative process that bridges different artistic approaches.
Inspired by the Exhibition: When Children’s Drawing Meets Embroidery
The central theme of the workshop was inspired by the exhibition of Karina Textile Miniatures – Subtle Similarities. The workshop’s concept directly reflected her work on display, which was created by layering a child’s drawing with hand embroidery.
This piece carries the profound emotion of an intergenerational dialogue, where a spontaneous and fast drawing gesture meets the slow, meditative rhythm of a hand stitch. Here, the embroidery does not act as a mere illustration; instead, it follows the line, gently touches it, and nudges it, transforming the drawing into a new visual record.
Our Creative Process
Inside the gallery, children were provided with a variety of materials to experiment with freely:
- Creating the Foundation: Participants began by creating their own prints or drawings. To spark inspiration, templates featuring animal themes were also available.
- Playing with Lines: Once the colors dried, the most interesting part began—embroidery. The children learned to work with lines, adding new structures to their motifs.
- Creativity for Everyone: To ensure the experience was accessible to the youngest participants as well, we adapted the process to their age. Instead of embroidery, the little ones enjoyed using textile paints and markers.
We are delighted that we were able to create a space at the Umelka Gallery where childhood spontaneity met the patience of textile art. We would like to thank all the young artists for their participation, and we look forward to our next project together.
