Searching for a common “heavyweight” sound between the bass trombone and the baritone saxophone,
A long-term collaboration,
A constant tension between strict harmonic structure and the freedom of free improvisation
– this is the foundation of the project that Erik Rothenstein and Michal Motýľ present on their new original album. Beyond its strong jazz foundation, their work draws inspiration from world music and utilizes complex odd-meter rhythms, creating an authentic and genre-defying dialogue.
Both protagonists share similar artistic roots, a deep interest in contemporary jazz, and a strong focus on original composition. A significant role in the project is played by their fascination with the sound of low-register wind instruments, which here serve as equal melodic and dramaturgical voices. The baritone saxophone of Erik Rothenstein and the bass trombone of Michal Motýľ create the project’s specific sonic identity, built upon a contrast of power, lyricism, and subtle improvisational work with tone color.
An important component of their musical language is collective improvisation, openness to ever-changing musical situations, and the search for a common sonic space where composition and spontaneous creation meet.
The new album features nine original compositions by both protagonists. Musically, it primarily operates within the jazz idiom, yet with a significantly expanded aesthetic palette. Various approaches and forms appear—from odd-meter rhythmic grooves and more lyrical compositions to elements of free jazz and free improvisation. World music also serves as a strong source of inspiration, reflected in the rhythmic structures, coloring, and the overall openness of the musical material.
